Anker stone dominoes: build patiently, then watch them fall
These dominoes are made from the well-known Anker stone. This material has traditionally been made from a mixture of quartz sand, chalk and linseed oil, which is pressed and fired. The pieces are heavy, but smooth and feel soft and warm to the touch. That makes them pleasant to hold. And because they’re made of stone, they sound very different when they fall from wooden or plastic dominoes. A sensory boost from playing with this material!
Building a domino run takes good finger coordination and patience. The small size helps children learn to use a proper pincer grip.
- Fine motor skills and pincer grip: picking up the pieces and placing them precisely
- Hand-eye coordination and force control: too much force and they all fall; too little and a piece stands crooked
- Concentration, impulse control and perseverance: staying calm while building, even when things go wrong
- Sensory experience: the weight, smooth surface and distinctive sound
By building again and again, children practise the same finger movements. This repetition helps them automate fine motor skills.
